My research focuses on statistical methods, mainly for biological and medical data. I have a strong interest both in understanding the structures inherent in models and estimation procedures, and in understanding phenomena and discovering knowledge in natural science domains. Specifically, I work on (1) constructing estimation methods that yield stable results, based on approaches such as regularization and the aggregation of multiple analysis results, (2) elucidating properties of models, such as identifiability and the existence of estimates, and (3) developing methods for individual problems and conducting empirical studies in fields such as epidemiology and epigenetics.

  • A Note on Estimation Error Bound and Grouping Effect of Transfer Elastic Net. (Tomo Y., Comm. Statist. We conducted a non-asymptotic error analysis of the Transfer Elastic Net, a sparse transfer learning method via a combination of \(\ell_1\) and \(\ell_2\) regularization. Based on the derived estimation error bound and on comparisons with existing methods, we discussed the usefulness of transferring parameter information from the source model, as well as the role played by the \(\ell_2\) regularization term with respect to correlation among features.

  • Zero-Inflated Logistic Regression Models with Shared Design: Identifiability, Existence of Estimates, and a Relabeling Rule. For zero-inflated logistic regression models in which the same covariates are shared by the logistic regression for the response variable and by the logistic regression for the latent variable governing the zero mixture, we showed, under certain assumptions on the covariates, that the model is unidentifiable as an ordered pair of regression coefficient parameters but is identifiable up to the equivalence class induced by exchange symmetry. To handle the multimodality implied by this result, we also constructed a sampling scheme based on Pólya-Gamma augmentation and replica exchange. In addition, we examined sufficient conditions for the existence of the maximum likelihood estimates in zero-inflated logistic regression models, as well as the sign-reversal phenomenon of the pseudo-true values arising when zero inflation is ignored in the modeling.
  • Median Consensus Embedding for Dimensionality Reduction. We proposed Median Consensus Embedding, a method that integrates multiple low-dimensional embeddings on a metric space and thereby achieves visualization that is stable against the initial values used in optimization. Assuming that the embeddings to be integrated are i.i.d. random elements, we showed that the method exponentially converges to the population embedding defined for their probability measure, and numerical experiments supported the theoretically established convergence behavior. The method can also be used to integrate embeddings obtained under multiple hyperparameter settings, or to visualize data whose missing values have been imputed by multiple imputation.
  • Efficient Gibbs Sampling in Cox Regression Models Using Composite Partial Likelihood and Pólya-Gamma Augmentation. By defining a composite partial likelihood in which the softmax function appearing in the partial likelihood of the Cox regression model is replaced by a combination of sigmoid functions, we proposed GS4Cox, a Gibbs sampling method based on Pólya-Gamma augmentation. The asymptotic bias of the posterior mean and the scale of the distribution, both incurred by the use of the composite partial likelihood, are corrected through calibration of the generalized posterior based on the open-faced sandwich adjustment (Tamano S. & Tomo Y., arXiv, 2025).

  • A Comparative Simulation Study of Cluster Ensemble Algorithms Integrated with Multiple Imputation for Clustering with Missing Data. (Tomo Y., Sato F., & Oba M., BMC Med. Res. When multiple imputation is applied to data with missing values and cluster partitions are obtained for the resulting complete datasets, the results can be integrated by cluster ensemble (consensus clustering) methods based on a Fréchet median-type consensus rule; we carried out a practical evaluation of the algorithms used for this integration.
  • Estimating Consensus Epidemic Trajectories via a Constrained Power Fréchet Mean with Functional Registration. As a method to obtain a single representative SEIR-type epidemic curve when several sets of epidemiological parameters are available, we developed a method that summarizes the curves themselves in the function space to which they belong, rather than summarizing the parameters. Instead of simply taking a Fréchet median or mean, we constructed an optimization algorithm that imposes partial SEIR-type differential equation constraints so as to preserve epidemiological interpretability.

We developed an incremental batch effect correction method that avoids re-correcting previously corrected data. This method makes it possible to evaluate newly added data without re-correcting past results, for instance in studies designed to measure DNA methylation over time.

For the construction of statistical models that predict age from DNA methylation information (epigenetic clocks), we developed a parameter transfer learning method that uses the regression coefficients of an existing model as a source of information via a combination of \(\ell_1\) and \(\ell_2\) regularization. By leveraging information from an existing model, our method is expected to be useful in constructing more accurate models even for populations with small sample sizes.
